If you're like me, you're always looking for a *special* and somewhat elevated dining experience. One where you feel pampered, and each bite of food/ sip of drink makes you close your eyes to savor its goodness for an extra moment more. Places that make you feel truly present. The Downright Gabbler was exactly this. What made this place truly special however, was the stories you hear and the warmth of this family's love. Owned and operated as a family business, Gary and his daughter, Kirsty both made appearances as historical storyteller and chef respectively. You could see they both had a passion for their part in this places greater whole and that this place is a true pride to the family. I loved learning about Scotland's history through the eyes of Scotch Whisky, and feel Gary did such an exceptional job explaining things in terms that were both interesting and easy to understand as someone largely unaware of Scottish history. I also dearly loved every single bite of food. You could taste the care in the crafting of these dishes. Each was a homage to traditional Scottish dishes while also being creative and truly scrumptious. My favorite element was the thoughtful proportion of complimenting flavors- from the smokey butter and fresh bread to the carrot purée aside a pickled beet and tender bite of lamb. The Downright Gobbler was a testament to care from top to bottom, right down to the intentionally feminist narratives sprinkled throughout the tales that gave spotlights to women of history who are often forgotten. To this point, the finale of the evening came over coffee/ tea when told of how the family settled on the restaurant's name, sharing the story of the life of Francis Wright, another incredible woman of history who deserves to be celebrated, and rightly is in this lovely place.Posted on GoogleAshley Maggiacomo05/07/2026 Just had a lovely and very entertaining afternoon Superb food, great service and wonderfull story telling Would thoroughly recommend, and hopefully will be back again soon Thank youPosted on GoogleMarion Berekis14/06/2026 We went for a themed dinner. It was superb. The DG is owned a run by a family that have division of labour down to a fine art. Not only is the food (prepared by a daughter), and the service (another daughter) excellent, but the small dining room (6 tables) is transformed into a family affair for all guests, who get to know each other as the evening goes on. Dad is the host and storyteller, and there is none finer in all of Scotland. We'll be back. Bet on it.Posted on GoogleDr B (Dr B)09/06/2026 A great evening, full of wonderful food and conversation - thank you guys!Posted on GoogleRichard Brook20/05/2026 Our travel agent booked us for the whiskey dinner experience and we had no idea how special this dinner would be. We had toured a distillery earlier in our trip, but this was entirely different. The Downright Gabbler gave us a chance to learn about Scottish history through one of its great treasures— drink! The food was also lovely and we laughed a lot. Very memorable and would recommend to anyone, but especially whisky and history buffs.Posted on GoogleAmanda Duvall17/05/2026 We did not stay at the hotel, but had an amazing dinner and history night. The food was delicious and the drinks well paired. The highlight was the history and storytelling by Gary. It was the perfect way to end our trip to the Highlands!Posted on GoogleTricia Walker04/05/2026 What a wonderful dinner. We didn’t stay there so I didn’t rate the rooms, but the restaurant was top notch. We had a great time, the food was great. Gary was very knowledgeable and shared the history of the Highlands. Enjoyed the whisky tasting, the beer and the special oat milk whisky drink. I’d highly recommend the experience to anyone!Posted on GoogleBen DuVal04/05/2026 The Super Scots Sunday lunch was just a superb experience from start to finish. Excellent fresh food, perfect wine pairing and what a special fantastic afternoon of stories and facts. It's such a truly a unique concept and an ideal way to spend a few hours. We would certainly return for another event or to stay. Great hospitality and whisky list as well!Posted on GoogleRachel Lynch03/05/2026 We booked the Highland Banquet for 2 based on reviews we'd seen and it sounded fabulous. We weren't disappointed, in fact on the night we were the only people there. We had the place to ourselves, meant we had our host's full attention and were able to chat and ask questions and give feedback the whole night. Arrived at 7:00pm and left at 10:30pm, so the night went smoothly given all the 6 different courses and associated drinks being served together with an entertaining story of Scottish history. All the drinks matched the food really well and all the dishes were high quality. We really enjoyed the night and well worth the £194 paid.Posted on GoogleJoseph Kincaid31/03/2026
