Here at the Downright Gabbler we offer you the chance to explore our history and culture, in a fun way, using the best of Scottish food and drink. We’re a family business using our skills in hospitality and storytelling to entertain our guests. We offer several unique events from Afternoon Teas to lavish dinners. We want to share our love of history and food, as well as the drinks that made Scotland famous.

You can book our events online below, or you can call us on 01463 782800 or contact us. For parties of 8 or more you can have exclusive use choosing any one of our existing events, or we can tailor the food and storytelling just for you… and we love a challenge!

We have vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options and can usually accommodate most dietary requirements, but require 24 hours notice for this please.

Events for THIS MONTH:

The nights are drawing in and we’ve got a mix of daytime and evening events to keep you warm this winter. You can enjoy stories about our Super Scots at our Sunday Lunch or a Super Scots Supper. We’ve also got Living the Dram, A Write Good Night and a Celebration of Beauly and the Black Isle at various times, as well as Tipsy Afternoon Tea.

This is your last chance before we bring in the Christmas Selection Box Special. We’re starting to get requests in for exclusive use events so if you want to get together with friends, family or colleagues, give us a call.

My partner surprised me with the "Living the Dream" evening and a whisky flight a few weeks ago and it was a wonderful experience! The food was exceptional - our stand outs were the beetroot remoulade and Kirsty's cranachan. The storytelling was entertaining as well as informative. We plan to return when we are next in Beauly and try another menu. (The only very slight feedback I would give is that it would be great to have music in between the storytelling as the room felt a little quiet which made talking a bit awkward)

We were lucky enough to stumble across this restaurant when looking for places to eat before arriving for our holiday in the area. We booked onto the ‘Living the Dram’ evening. Such an unusual and individual concept. Garry and his family are providing a highly entertaining dining experience. The history of whisky was very interesting. The story was told in stages between courses. You could therefore eat in peace and enjoy the delicious food served - the best food we’d had all holiday. Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

This is not a review for the hotel-we did not stay there. We DID discover the Gabbler whilst shopping in Beauly, and booked a whisky and history experience. The food was excellent, drams obviously fabulous thisclose to all those Speyside distilleries, but the best aspect by far was the storytelling. Amusing, informative, and simply fun, this was an experience I would highly recommend! NB: I worked in the wine and spirits industry for ~30 years. This isn’t some tourist claptrap. They know their whisky history and tell it in a highly entertaining style.

7 course dinner, fresh ingredients, stories selected for its relation to my family's ancestral lineage, a comfortable pace between dishes, and everything pared very well! Thank you for a night to remember! ❤️ sadly, I was only able to experience the service of the restaurant because I stayed in a nearby hotel. Still, I know where I will be booking the next time I visit Scotland!!🥰

Wonderful experience for the "Living the dram" dinner at the Downright Gabbler, one of the highlights of our holiday in Scotland for sure! The food was amazing, a subtle and delicious twist on traditional Scottish dishes. The history of whisky (along with tasting) told by Garry throughout the meals was very entertaining, related with humour and passion. The atmosphere of this family business was friendly and welcoming, I highly recommend it! Thanks again for this great concept you created😊

If you're like me, you're always looking for a *special* and somewhat elevated dining experience. One where you feel pampered, and each bite of food/ sip of drink makes you close your eyes to savor its goodness for an extra moment more. Places that make you feel truly present. The Downright Gabbler was exactly this. What made this place truly special however, was the stories you hear and the warmth of this family's love. Owned and operated as a family business, Gary and his daughter, Kirsty both made appearances as historical storyteller and chef respectively. You could see they both had a passion for their part in this places greater whole and that this place is a true pride to the family. I loved learning about Scotland's history through the eyes of Scotch Whisky, and feel Gary did such an exceptional job explaining things in terms that were both interesting and easy to understand as someone largely unaware of Scottish history. I also dearly loved every single bite of food. You could taste the care in the crafting of these dishes. Each was a homage to traditional Scottish dishes while also being creative and truly scrumptious. My favorite element was the thoughtful proportion of complimenting flavors- from the smokey butter and fresh bread to the carrot purée aside a pickled beet and tender bite of lamb. The Downright Gobbler was a testament to care from top to bottom, right down to the intentionally feminist narratives sprinkled throughout the tales that gave spotlights to women of history who are often forgotten. To this point, the finale of the evening came over coffee/ tea when told of how the family settled on the restaurant's name, sharing the story of the life of Francis Wright, another incredible woman of history who deserves to be celebrated, and rightly is in this lovely place.

We went for a themed dinner. It was superb. The DG is owned a run by a family that have division of labour down to a fine art. Not only is the food (prepared by a daughter), and the service (another daughter) excellent, but the small dining room (6 tables) is transformed into a family affair for all guests, who get to know each other as the evening goes on. Dad is the host and storyteller, and there is none finer in all of Scotland. We'll be back. Bet on it.
